Sunday's European Under-21 Championship quarter-final predictions

Germany blazed a trail in Group B of the European Under-21 Championship, scoring nine goals and winning all three of their matches, and they can seal a semi-final spot with victory over Italy.

Antonio Di Salvo’s side eased past Slovenia 3-0 in their opener before serving up plenty of entertainment in a thrilling 4-2 win over the Czech Republic.

A closing 2-1 success over England was made all the more impressive as, already assured of qualification, Di Salvo made 11 changes and didn’t even need to call upon Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade, who had scored four times in the opening two group victories.

So Germany should be feeling fresh for this quarter-final clash with Italy, who finished second to Spain in Group A after edging to 1-0 victories over Slovakia and Romania before a 1-1 draw with La Roja.

The Germans also scored 35 goals in their ten qualifiers and are likely to maintain the attacking approach that has served them so well.

The Azzurrini are well-organised, with a mature squad, but they may struggle to match such a vibrant Germany frontline who find goals easy to come by.

The other quarter-final sees Group D winners Denmark meet Group C runners-up France and it should be a lively encounter.

Denmark upset the Netherlands to top the group, winning 2-1 against the Dutch, and their three matches were richly entertaining. There was a total of 12 goals scored and both teams scored on each occasion.

After being held to Portugal in a goalless draw in their tournament opener, France left it late to defeat Georgia 3-2 before punishing Poland in a 4-1 rout and this dust-up with the Danes should live up to those fireworks.
