England Women vs Australia Women preview

England produced a series of stirring comebacks on their way to Euro 2025 glory in the summer but they were unable to overcome another sluggish start in Saturday's friendly against Brazil.

Sarina Wiegman's side were 2-0 down inside 18 minutes at the Etihad Stadium, where a 21st-minute red card for Brazil's Angelina opened the door for the Lionesses.

But the European champions managed only three shots on target, one of them Georgia Stanway's successful penalty early in the second half, and they are targeting a more ruthless attacking display against Australia at Pride Park in Derby.

England are hot favourites to frank the form of their 3-1 win over the Aussies in the 2023 World Cup semi-final in Sydney. There are plenty of familiar faces in the opposition as 11 members of Australia's squad play in the Women's Super League.

Chelsea's Sam Kerr and Arsenal's Steph Catley are among the Australia players capable of landing a blow on a rejigged England defence, even if first-choice goalkeeper Hannah Hampton is passed fit for the Lionesses.

England are missing injured captain Leah Williamson and Chelsea centre-back Millie Bright, who announced her international retirement this month. Wingers Lauren James and Lauren Hemp are also significant absentees although Wiegman still has plenty of attacking talent in her squad.

Euros heroine Michelle Agyemang and in-form Chelsea forward Aggie Beever-Jones are pushing for starts while Arsenal's Beth Mead, Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo are class acts.

Backing over 2.5 goals has been a winning bet in ten of England's last 12 internationals and the exceptions were the European Championship semi-final against Italy and final against Spain, which both finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.
