England U21 vs Germany U21 predictions

Harvey Elliott's stunning brace against the Netherlands means Lee Carsley's England Under-21 side will get the chance to defend their European Championship title in Saturday's final against Germany in Bratislava.

The Young Lions started the tournament strongly thanks to a 3-1 victory over the Czech Republic but soon lost their way in the group stage, scraping through to the quarter-finals despite a 0-0 draw with Slovenia and a 2-1 defeat to Germany.

However, England have found a new level of performance in the knockout stage, dispatching joint ante-post favourites Spain 3-1 in the quarters before an Elliott-inspired 2-1 victory over the Netherlands on Wednesday.

The two poor group-stage performances could be attributed to Carsley's experimentation. The England boss started just two natural defenders and no out-and-out striker in the defeat to Germany but he has found a more settled side since, bringing in Jay Stansfield to lead the line and reverting to a more knowledgeable back four against Netherlands in the semis.

England enter the final as slight favourites but Germany deserve plenty of credit after winning all five of their matches at the tournament, outscoring the Young Lions 15-10 and impressively dispatching France 3-0 in the semis.

Keeping the tournament's six-goal top scorer Nick Woltemade quiet will be key to England's chances but in Toulouse's Charlie Cresswell and Bayer Leverkusen-bound Jarell Quansah they have two experienced and powerful centre-backs who could end the giant striker's run of scoring in each of his appearances in Slovakia.

Germany will not go away quietly – they have scored at least two goals in all five of their Euros games – and extra-time or even penalties may be needed.

However, this is an England squad filled with ability. Captain Elliott and Cresswell were part of the team who triumphed in 2023, Jack Hinshelwood, Elliot Anderson and Tino Livramento are regular starters for top Premier League sides and there could still be more to come from players capable of producing somethings spectacular such as Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee.

England have prevailed in plenty of youth tournaments in recent years and this talented group look set to be the latest Young Lions to etch their name into the history books.
