Match preview

Spain were undefeated in 15 matches before losing 1-0 away to Ukraine in a Nations League contest last month and they can respond in a positive manner by defeating Holland in a friendly in Amsterdam.

It is a shade over eight years since Spain capped off an era of dominance by winning Euro 2012 but they remain one of the continent's heavyweight teams and could contend at the delayed European Championship finals.

Holland are also looking to make an impact next summer, having returned to prominence by reaching the inaugural 2019 Nations League final where they lost 1-0 to hosts Portugal.

The Dutch revival was underpinned by a solid defence but those foundations have been severely weakened by serious injuries to central defenders Matthijs De Ligt (shoulder) and Virgil van Dijk (knee).

De Ligt has returned to training with Juventus and could feature for the first time since March when Juve host Cagliari after the international break.

However, he remains absent for Holland and so is his regular sidekick, Van Dijk, who is not expected to return until well into next year.

Coping without both powerhouse defenders will be a challenge because their replacements are nowhere near the same quality.

The Oranje may have to compensate by scoring a few more goals but their attack looks short of world class.

Lyon attacker Memphis Depay is the squad's top scorer with 19 in 56 internationals but he has netted just once in his last seven club appearances and hasn't registered for the national team since October 2019.

Lacking a prolific goalscorer is something Spain have had to get used to, but they have kept churning out consistent results.

Despite the loss to Ukraine they are top of Nations League Group A4 and have a great chance to consolidate their position when taking on sectional basement boys Switzerland in Basel on Saturday.

Manager Luis Enrique might save a few key men for the Swiss contest but his squad looks strong with rising stars Sergio Reguilon, Marco Asensio, Rodri, Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo learning the ropes from veterans Sergio Ramos and Sergio Busquets.

They could go far next summer and have every chance against injury-hit Holland.

Key stat

Spain have lost only one of their last 16 matches.
