Match preview

Borussia Monchengladbach head to Freiburg on Friday night and possess the firepower to boost their Champions League hopes.

The race to finish in the top four of the Bundesliga looks set to go down to the wire and Marcus Rose's side can steal a march before their rivals play on Saturday.

Unbeaten in five on the road, Gladbach will leapfrog RB Leipzig into third with a victory at the Schwarzwald-Stadion, while simultaneously opening a three-point gap on Bayer Leverkusen.

Key to their hopes will be French forwards Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram, both of whom are 5-4 to score.

Plea is just one of four players across Europe's top five leagues to have reached double-figures for both goals and assists and his tally of ten strikes for the season puts him level with Thuram in the club's scoring charts.

Meanwhile, his compatriot is quickly emerging from his famous father's shadow and has four goals in as many games, including a brace in last weekend's 4-1 win over Union Berlin.

Thuram netted the opener when these two met in December as Gladbach ran out 4-2 winners, and they will be aiming to expose a team lacking confidence at home.

Since the restart, eighth-placed Freiburg have lost both fixtures on their own patch 1-0 to hinder their European hopes. But they have a good record against tonight's visitors, winning 11 of the last 17 Bundesliga meetings at the Schwarzwald-Stadion.

Christian Streich will hope to have Robin Koch available after the German international was withdrawn after 75 minutes of last Friday's 1-0 defeat to Leverkusen with a back injury.

Amir Abrashi is poised to step in if Koch is sidelined, while Luca Waldschmidt could offer something different in attack alongside top-scorer Nils Petersen, a man who has scored from the penalty spot in the last three meetings between these sides.

For Gladbach, defender Tony Jantschke is back from suspension but may have to settle for a spot on the bench. However, Christoph Kramer could earn a recall to the starting 11 should Rose choose to stiffen his midfield.

Forward Breel Embolo is a doubt with an ankle injury, but there are more than enough goals in the team with Plea and Thuram around.

Gladbach may have history against them but records are there to be broken and their form suggests they can justify their odds-on tag with a victory.

Key stat

Marcus Thuram has scored four goals in as many games since the Bundesliga restarted.
