Match preview

Jurgen Klopp described Liverpool's 1-0 defeat at home to Burnley on Thursday as a massive punch in the face but his team can climb off the canvas and land a knockout blow against Manchester United in the FA Cup fourth round.

There was plenty of shadow boxing and a lack of killer instinct when Liverpool and United drew 0-0 in last Sunday's Premier League encounter.

It was the seventh stalemate in the last ten meetings between the teams but something has to give at Old Trafford, even it it takes extra-time and penalties to find a winner.

When the draw was made the fixture stood out as the plum tie of the round and it's importance to Liverpool has probably increased in the wake of their midweek defeat.

Liverpool's title odds have shifted to 8-1, only slightly shorter than their FA Cup odds of 10-1, and many Reds supporters would argue that their best hope of silverware lies at the end of the road to Wembley.

Klopp has never taken Liverpool beyond the FA Cup fifth round but he paid the competition plenty of respect with his selection for the third-round tie at Aston Villa.

The German looks set to go strong again and he gave himself some wriggle room by leaving Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino out of his starting line-up against Burnley.

United's build-up has been easier because they have had an extra day off since their 2-1 success at Fulham on Wednesday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were far from fluent against the Cottagers but came from behind to take the points for the seventh time in ten away league games.

Moments of magic have decided a lot of games in United's favour and a reinvigorated Paul Pogba was the difference=maker against Fulham with a superb left-footed strike.

Pogba's goal sealed United's fifth win in seven games – all by a single goal – but it is doubtful whether they can keep churning out slender victories.

Flashes of individual quality are often enough to overcome lesser opposition but United may need to improve their overall standard of play to flourish against better teams.

They have played six matches against the Premier League's big-six clubs this season, drawing three and losing three, and that record will probably need to improve if the top prizes are to be won.

It is a long time since Solskjaer's team truly dominated a game against major domestic rivals but if they try to play front-foot football against Liverpool they risk being exposed.

The last few weeks have seen Liverpool grow incredibly frustrated against defence-minded opposition but they may be afforded a little more space to play at the Theatre of Dreams and are capable of taking advantage.

Key stat

Liverpool have lost only one of their last 11 games against Manchester United.
