FA Cup final predictions

Crystal Palace have had two negative experiences in FA Cup finals but it could be a case of third time lucky with the Eagles in with a decent chance of defeating Manchester City under the famous Wembley arch.

For the third time in their history, Palace are preparing to take on Manchester opposition in the final of English football's biggest domestic competition.

They were second best to Manchester United in 1990 and 2016 but are hopeful of upsetting the odds against City, who are 16 points above them in the Premier League.

Success has become habitual for City, who have won at least one major trophy in each of the last seven seasons, but the Citizens finished without silverware in 2016-17 (their first season under Pep Guardiola) and are running the risk of another fruitless campaign.

City have had to get used to the unusual situation of challenging for just a single trophy.

Their Premier League title defence was effectively finished before Christmas and the last hope of winning multiple trophies concluded with a 6-3 aggregate loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League knockout round playoffs.

Champions League qualification and FA Cup progress have been City's revised targets and there is the possibility of a positive outcome on both fronts.

City are unbeaten in ten games for the first time since October, although they showed a lack of ruthlessness last Saturday when drawing 0-0 at Southampton and Palace should be sensing an opportunity.

The Londoners made a slow start to the Premier League – winning three of their opening 18 matches - but have steadily improved and will go into next week's final two fixtures with an outside chance of a top-half finish.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner wants his players to focus on one game at a time and must have enjoyed seeing their commitment in last week's dominant 2-0 victory at Tottenham.

He demonstrated a trophy-winning knack by leading Eintracht Frankfurt to glory in the Europa League in 2022 and will have Palace's players well prepared to perform to a high standard in the biggest game in the club's history.

There are few clubs more used to the big occasion than City, who have made Wembley a second home in recent years.

And City's nous was on display in the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest when they forged ahead with Rico Lewis's second minute goal and ran out 2-0 winners.

However, City's semi-final performance could not quite compare to the levels Palace had reached against Aston Villa a day earlier.

The Eagles went into the Villa tie as underdogs but dealt superbly with the occasion and came up with moments of sheer brilliance in a superb 3-0 success.

Glasner's side were outstanding in all areas of the pitch, but their attacking trio – Jean-Philippe Mateta, Eberechi Eze and Ismaila Sarr – were the main points of difference and are the Palace fans will make the return trip to Wembley with a healthy dollop of expectation along with the usual hope.

Palace face the toughest challenge of their FA Cup run, but they have an excellent chance of success and are the value choice to prevail on what could be the greatest day in their history.
