Sunday's European football predictions

Wolfsburg opened their Bundesliga campaign with a convincing 3-1 win at Heidenheim, a result made all the more impressive because it was achieved without a fully-fit Mohamed Amoura.

Their Algerian talisman came off the bench to score, however, and should be back in the starting line-up for a visit from Mainz, making him the standout scorer pick in a fixture which has produced 15 goals in the last three meetings.

Amoura bagged ten league goals last season, including one against Mainz, and he should get plenty of chances against a side whose only clean sheet in 15 games came against second-tier Dynamo Dresden.

Cologne were one of the sides to score against Mainz in that run, beating them 1-0 last Sunday, but the promoted Billy Goats were aided by a 60th-minute red card for Paul Nebel and may not be so fortunate when hosting Freiburg.

Julian Schuster's Freiburg side finished fifth in the Bundesliga in 2024-25 and although they suffered a shock 3-1 loss to Augsburg in their opener, it shouldn't take too long for them to rediscover their form from last season given they won the expected-goals battle 2.4-1.3 in that defeat.

Freiburg tend to fare better on their travels and have enjoyed an eight-game unbeaten run on the road including wins in their last four away matches, and they can take the points in Cologne.

Espanyol produced the biggest shock of La Liga's opening weekend when beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 and they landed another positive result by holding Real Sociedad to a 2-2 draw in the Basque Country last weekend.

Manolo Gonzalez's men are playing with real confidence, racking up 3.1 expected goals against that top-class pair, and they should have too much for Osasuna, who struggled to create chances against ten-man Valencia in a narrow 1-0 win last time.
