Sunday's European football predictions

After losing their opening two Bundesliga matches, Freiburg have turned things around with three straight victories in all competitions.

Freiburg continued their revival with a 2-1 victory over Basel in the Europa League in midweek and their domestic performances have probably deserved more than six points because their underlying numbers are inferior to only those of Bayern Munich and Dortmund.

Sunday's opponents Hoffenheim are two from two on the road this term, but they have also suffered heavy defeats at home to Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Both teams have scored in all four of Hoffenheim's league matches this term while Freiburg have kept just one clean sheet.

With that in mind, back an improving Freiburg side to win an entertaining encounter.

Lyon have made a great start in Ligue 1 but their off-field struggles this summer suggest they will not be able to maintain a top-four push.

Lille, meanwhile, have marked themselves out as contenders for a Champions League place, winning three of their last four league outings.

The club from northern France entered the weekend as the joint-highest goalscorers in Ligue 1 and are an interesting odds-against proposition, especially as Lyon lost five of their eight away matches against fellow top-half sides last season.

Serie A champions Napoli visit a revitalised Milan side in the biggest match in Italy on Sunday.

The Rossoneri have been extremely solid since Max Allegri's return as head coach, and have kept four consecutive clean sheets since a shock 2-1 loss at home to Cremonese on the opening weekend.

That resolve will be tested to the maximum by Napoli, however, as the champions have scored nine goals in winning the first four matches of their title defence.

Milan also know where the net is and that could lead to a fairly open San Siro showdown.
