Saturday European football predictions

Permutations and motivations have to be considered when betting on the final day of the Ligue 1 and Bundesliga seasons on Saturday.

In France, the top three are confirmed but fourth spot, which secures a place in the Champions League qualifiers, is up for grabs and relegation is not a foregone conclusion.

Montpellier are down and St-Etienne are on course to join them but could leapfrog Le Havre into the relegation playoff position on the final day, although the situation is clouded by the possible demotion of Lyon for financial reasons.

Given Le Havre are away to Champions League-chasing Strasbourg, St-Etienne should be full of belief going into their game with Toulouse.

St-Etienne have won only eight league games all season but two of them have come within their last four games against Lyon and Reims.

Toulouse are locked in mid-table obscurity and have won just one of their last nine games, so it is fair to suggest the players are already on the beach.

In Germany, the battle for the final two Champions League spots takes centre stage with Freiburg hosting Eintracht Frankfurt in a virtual playoff, but the shootout for sixth and a Conference League berth is also interesting.

Mainz are in pole position but finish against Bayer Leverkusen, who will want to give Xabi Alonso a fitting send-off in his final game before departing for Real Madrid.

Leipzig, meanwhile, host a Stuttgart team who will be distracted by next week's DFB Pokal final, which offers them a route into Europe.

Stuttgart hammered Augsburg 4-0 on Sunday but their opponents had a player sent off after just 12 minutes. Before that Stuttgart had won just one of their last four games.

They will be missing creative influence Angelo Stiller and are worth opposing against Leipzig, who have picked up eight of their 13 league wins at home this term.
