Saturday's European football predictions

Real head to their city rivals Atletico boasting a perfect record after six La Liga games but the Madrid derby has a habit of ending honours even and it could be a similar scenario in Saturday’s showdown at the Metropolitano.

Xabi Alonso has warned his Real side against overconfidence following their faultless start and he has every right to be cautious as they have profited from a soft schedule, with one-goal wins over Osasuna, Mallorca and Real Sociedad showing that they are not the finished article.

Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe provide Los Blancos with star quality that Atletico can’t call upon in the same regard, but Diego Simeone’s men showed in a 3-2 defeat away at Liverpool in the Champions League that they are not far off the elite sides.

Atletico Madrid have already played out three 1-1 draws from six La Liga outings this season and seven of the last ten Madrid derbies have ended level after 90 minutes.

Inter’s hopes of regaining the Serie A title have already suffered a blow with defeats in two of their opening four games against Udinese and Juventus, but that should ensure that they are switched on at Cagliari.

Cristian Chivu’s side got their title pursuit back on track with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at home to Sassuolo last weekend but it was their third straight league game in which both teams had scored.

Cagliari have lost seven of their last eight meetings with the Nerazzurri but they have notched in three of the last five and a three-game winning run in all competitions should at least provide belief that they can have a go.

Toulouse have suffered three straight defeats in Ligue 1 but two of those reverses have come against Lille and Paris St-Germain, while the latest 1-0 loss at Auxerre was a freak result as they won the expected-goals battle 2.33-0.75.

Prior to being beaten 6-3 at home to PSG, Toulouse had toppled Brest 2-0 on their own patch and they are fancied to hit back against Nantes, who have endured 1-0 losses in their opening two away trips at Strasbourg and Nice.

The visitors won only three of their 17 away games in Ligue 1 last term and are often plagued on their travels.
