Real Madrid will head into the international break on top of the La Liga table, but Los Blancos have something to prove after a midweek 1-0 loss at Liverpool in the Champions League.

Xabi Alonso's men could find redemption hard to come by when they visit fellow Madrid outfit Rayo Vallecano, while their chief challengers Barcelona are in action against Celta Vigo.

La Liga predictions & tips for this weekend’s matches

Elche vs Real Sociedad

Kick-off: 8pm Friday

Sociedad have scored eight goals in enjoying a three-match winning run and the White and Blues look capable of continuing their good form when they head for Elche.

Prediction: Real Sociedad

Girona vs Alaves

Kick-off: 1pm Saturday

Alaves are struggling to score on the road and Girona can take advantage. The Catalans sit at the bottom of the table but beat Valencia in their last home outing and can seal another vital three points.

Prediction: Girona

Sevilla vs Osasuna

Kick-off: 3.15pm Saturday

Neither Sevilla nor Osasuna has won in their last three games and Los Rojiblancos' matches tend to be exciting. Both teams have scored in all five of their outings at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and they can edge an entertaining contest.

Prediction: Sevilla to win & both teams to score

Atletico Madrid vs Levante

Kick-off: 5.30pm Saturday

Levante have failed to keep a clean sheet in 17 of their last 19 Primera Liga games and Atletico Madrid look too good for them. They have scored three goals in their last two home games, conceding only once, and are expected to outclass their visitors.

Prediction: Atletico Madrid to win to nil

Espanyol vs Villarreal

Kick-off: 8pm Saturday

Villarreal were stunned by Pafos in the Champions League on Wednesday, but they went into the weekend in third place in La Liga, and should respond positively against Espanyol. The hosts have beaten Elche and Real Oviedo recently, but they lost 2-1 to Alaves last week, and this is a tougher task.

Prediction: Villarreal

Athletic Bilbao vs Real Oviedo

Kick-off: 1pm Sunday

Athletic Bilbao can end their losing streak with a win to nil against struggling Real Oviedo. The visitors drew 3-3 with Genoa in their last away match, but they have failed to score in three other La Liga matches since the beginning of October. Bilbao's defence can stand firm at San Mames.

Prediction: Bilbao to win to nil

Rayo Vallecano vs Real Madrid

Kick-off: 3.15pm Sunday

Real Madrid put in one of their worst performances of the season when losing 1-0 at Liverpool on Tuesday and they will have to work hard to bounce back against Rayo Vallecano, who have won three home games in a row and are unbeaten in three head-to-heads on their own patch.

Prediction: Rayo Vallecano or draw double chance

Mallorca vs Getafe

Kick-off: 5.30pm Sunday

Mallorca are tough to beat at Son Moix, with their only home defeat this season coming against Barcelona in the opening round of La Liga fixtures. Getafe, full of confidence after back-to-back wins, could make this a closely contested clash, with the points potentially shared in the Balearics.

Prediction: Draw

Valencia vs Real Betis

Kick-off: 5.30pm Sunday

Four defeats and no wins in six La Liga games mean Carlos Corberan is under real pressure and a visit from Real Betis may force Valencia to swing the axe. Betis were exceptional when beating Lyon 2-0 on Thursday and have now lost just one of their last 12 games, winning each of the last three.

Prediction: Real Betis

Celta Vigo vs Barcelona

Kick-off: 8pm Sunday

Celta Vigo extended their winning streak to five with Thursday's 3-0 rout of Dinamo Zagreb and there is every chance they contribute to a thriller. Barcelona were held to a 3-3 draw at Club Brugge on Wednesday and over 3.5 goals is set to land for the third straight head-to-head clash.

Prediction: Over 3.5 goals
