Goals expected when Sociedad visit Vigo
Attacks should be on top in entertaining opener
La Liga
5.15pm Saturday
After reaching the semi-finals of both the Europa League and Copa del Rey last season, ambitions are high at Celta Vigo going into the new campaign.
Their tremendous cup and European performances were, however, detrimental to their league form towards the end of last season as Vigo slipped from eighth position at the halfway mark to 13th. With no European distractions this season, Juan Carlos Unzue’s side will hope to maintain their form throughout the campaign.
The summer transfer window has seemingly passed Unzue by with just three new players arriving, but continuity can sometimes be the best policy and as was the case last season, Celta games are unlikely to be dull if their pre-season showings are anything to go by.
More than two-thirds of Celta’s 38 La Liga games last term featured three or more goals and in seven summer friendlies they have notched 13 goals – including four in a 4-1 rout of Serie A heavyweights Roma last Sunday.
Last season’s 19-goal top scorer Iago Aspas has looked particularly sharp in pre-season, bagging a brace in that win over the Italians.
Real Sociedad have enjoyed a much more measured preparation for the new season with only two wins to show for their efforts.
Last season’s sixth-placed finish was their highest in five seasons and as with Celta, goals were a recurring theme of their campaign.
There were 112 goals in Sociedad’s matches last year at an average of 2.9 per game.
It doesn’t look like either side has abandoned their attacking principles for the new season, and a repeat of last term’s final-day 2-2 draw is certainly a runner at 14-1. Taking over 2.5 goals looks the sensible wager.
Recommendation
Over 2.5 goals
