Tottenham vs AZ Alkmaar predictions

Would it be unfair to say that Ange Postecoglou's future hinges on Tottenham's Europa League last 16 second leg against AZ Alkmaar?

While he would be unlikely to depart immediately, with his team out of both domestic cups and 13th in the Premier League, another defeat may accelerate Spurs' search for a summer replacement.

Their hopes of playing continental football next term look slim but winning this tournament represents a route back into the Champions League, which could see Postecoglou stay for another season.

Tottenham were listless during last Thursday's defeat in Alkmaar, managing just one shot on target, but subsequently recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Similar spirit is required if they are to prolong their Europa League campaign against an AZ side protecting a 1-0 lead after Lucas Bergvall's own goal.

Introduced at half-time against Bournemouth, Bergvall should go back into the side, as could Micky van de Ven, who will be tasked with marking former Tottenham youngster Troy Parrott.

Spurs have already beaten AZ at home when Richarlison's penalty was the only goal in the pair's League Phase clash in October.

The enormity of this game suggests a cagey contest but context is key, and it is worth considering that AZ are sixth in the Eredivisie and have failed to win away in Europe.

Spurs are the only team not to have scored twice against them in that run but are a better side with the fit-again Van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Dominic Solanke available and can secure a crucial victory. At the prices, a home win by more than two goals looks the best bet.
