Simpson can move into Wells Fargo contention
Local knowledge should help
Second round
Sky Sports 4, 7pm Friday
Ultra-consistent Italian Francesco Molinari leads by one shot after the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Eagle Point but Dustin Johnson is 4-1 favourite after carding a two-under-par 70 in his first round since lifting the WGC-Mexico title.
Johnson, returning from the back injury that ruled him out of the Masters, looked solid enough on his first competitive outing in almost two months making three birdies on the opening back-nine before dropping a shot after the turn.
He is scheduled to tee off alongside Bill Haas and Davis Love at 6.06pm UK & Ireland time, although Friday morning's tee times were delayed by an hour due to inclement weather.
While Johnson will be looking to make further inroads as he bids for a fourth consecutive PGA Tour title, bookmakers aren't giving much away with the US Open champ no bigger than 8-11 to shoot lower than his two rivals.
The Wells Fargo is being staged at Eagle Point this year while its tradition home of Quail Hollow prepares to host the USPGA Championship and local man Webb Simpson will be looking to improve on a one-over 73 that left him below the cut line.
Course member Simpson will be hoping to make the weekend at the very least and is worth chancing at 13-8 to see off William McGirt and Smylie Kaufman in the 5.44pm threeball.
McGirt opened up with a 75 yesterday while Kaufman is great pals with Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas but is yet to prove that he is in the same league as those superstars.
Recommendation
W Simpson to win threeball
