Real Betis vs Nottingham Forest preview

Nottingham Forest return to European competition for the first time since March 1996, when they lost 7-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich in the Uefa Cup quarter-final.

Bayern's team featured icons such as Lothar Matthaus, Jurgen Klinsmann, Jean-Pierre Papin and Oliver Kahn and Real Betis, Forest's opening Europa League opponents, have a host of former Premier League players in their squad.

Antony, Giovani Lo Celso, Hector Bellerin, Pablo Fornals, Junior Firpo and Sofyan Amrabat are remembered with varying degrees of fondness by English football fans.

Former Manchester United man Antony successfully rejuvenated his career in Seville last season, helping Betis reach the Conference League final, where they lost 4-1 to Chelsea.

While veteran Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini – a Premier League winner with Manchester City in 2013-14 – had to make do with a runners-up medal, Ange Postecoglou lifted the Europa League in his final act as Tottenham manager.

Postecoglou arrived at Forest after the breakdown of Nuno Espirito Santo's relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis and the Tricky Trees face a tough opener away to Betis.

Both clubs are rated as serious threats to Europa League favourites Aston Villa despite the fact that neither defence is convincing.

Forest lost 3-0 to West Ham in their final match under Nuno and Postecoglou's debut at Arsenal ended in a defeat by the same scoreline.

A 3-2 EFL Cup exit at Swansea, who scored in the 93rd and 97th minutes, was followed by a 1-1 draw at Burnley, where backers of both teams to score were celebrating inside 20 minutes.

Postecoglou boxed clever during Tottenham's Europa League knockout ties last term, moderating his usual gung-ho approach to see off AZ Alkmaar, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bodo/Glimt before a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final.

But both teams scored in all four of Spurs' away league-phase fixtures and another high-scoring contest is expected when his Forest side take on free-scoring Betis.

Full-back Firpo should add to card collection

Left-back Firpo struggled to stay out of trouble during his four seasons with Leeds, picking up 16 Premier League yellow cards in only 33 starts and ten substitute appearances.

Leeds generally dominated their Championship opponents last season but the Brazilian was still booked seven times in 30 starts and he has received two cautions in four La Liga games this term.

Confident Antony could break the deadlock

Antony has had ten shots in his last two league appearances for Betis and the confident winger is worth backing to open the scoring against Forest.

His only goal for United last season came in a 7-0 EFL Cup rout of Barnsley but a January move to Betis sparked a spectacular upturn in form.

The Brazil international scored five goals in 15 starts in La Liga and found the net in both legs of the Conference League semi-final against Fiorentina.

Over 1.5 second-half goals

Nottingham Forest have conceded plenty of late goals this season and their trip to Seville could come to life in the second half.

Giovani Lo Celso to score or assist a goal

The former Tottenham schemer should start in the number-ten role for Real Betis and he has contributed a goal or an assist in three of his last five La Liga games.

Neco Williams to have one or more shots

Forest's right-back scored with one of his three shots at Burnley on Saturday and he also had three attempts in Wales' World Cup qualifying win in Kazakhstan this month.
