The fifth and final Champions Tour major of the year, the US Senior Open at Jack Nicklaus’s old stamping ground, Scioto Country Club in Ohio, is also the richest with $3.75m up for grabs and Europe are favourites to grab the lion’s share of that.

Colin Montgomerie won two years ago but Bernhard Langer and Miguel Angel Jimenez are neck and neck at the top of the market, with Monty back in the pack after a less convincing third year among the over-50s.

Maybe the beefy Scot has too many irons in the fire to keep up the hot pace he had set for himself with three major triumphs in his first two seasons.
