This has become the year of the first-time Major winner, with Danny Willett, Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson taking turns to make a breakthrough in the Masters, US Open and Open. Will the trend continue in this week’s USPGA Championship at Baltusrol?

Maybe conventional wisdom about how difficult it is to make the step up to Major champion has become dated. With so many prestigious tournaments on the calendar these days, and multi-million-dollar prize funds the norm in this age of World Championships and the FedEx Cup, perhaps the Majors are not so daunting. The stakes are high every week.

Those with Major battle scars will find getting over the line in front most challenging. Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia are in great form, but have a long history of narrow failure in Majors to deal with. Westwood knows that chances to break his duck are limited at the age of 43, while 36-year-old Garcia once infamously announced he was not good enough to win Majors and seems to have deep-seated self-belief issues.
