Basel vs Aston Villa preview

Aston Villa have been making rapid progress on domestic and European fronts and their strong season can continue with a victory over Basel.

The early months of the campaign were a difficult period for Unai Emery's side, who lost out to Brentford in the EFL Cup first round and failed to win any of their opening five Premier League games. But those testing times have become a distant memory and the Villans have reeled off 13 victories from their last 15 fixtures.

Villa's latest and most satisfying success came at the weekend when Emi Buendia's 95th-minute goal secured a dramatic 2-1 victory at home to Arsenal and hauled them to within three points of the Premier League summit.

Fixtures are coming thick and fast but that seems to be more than welcome for Emery, who has several players approaching peak performance.

Influential pair Ollie Watkins and Youri Tielemans have come through their early-season injury problems, and there is an urgency for them to perform because several of Villa's fringe players are also having their say.

Buendia came off the bench to topple the Gunners and Donyell Malen has given the manager a firm nudge by scoring five times in his last seven appearances.

Emery has the luxury of being able to make changes without significantly weakening the level of performance and that is probably bad news for Basel, who could be in for one of their toughest tests of the competition.

The Swiss side sit third in their domestic league with eight victories from 16 games and are precariously placed in the Europa League after two wins, both on home soil, and three defeats.

They won at home to Stuttgart and FCSB  on matchdays two and four but are facing a step up in grade against Villa and appear to be heading for defeat.

Malen can make his mark

Malen has made just four Premier League starts this season but he is getting plenty of minutes in the Europa League and seems to be enjoying the competition.

The Dutch international has scored three times in the last two Europa League matches and could increase his goal tally on Swiss soil.

Emi Buendia to score or assist

Buendia popped up with the winning goal against Arsenal and is set to have his say in Switzerland.

Leo Leroy to be carded

The combative French midfielder is usually in the thick of the action and could soon test the patience of referee Halil Umut Meler.

Over 2.5 goals

An entertaining game looks likely with Basel keen to make home advantage count and Villa aiming for an eighth straight success.
