Match preview

Ireland's push for automatic qualification for Euro 2020 has gone right down to the wire but they are likely to come up short in their crunch match with Denmark in Dublin.

Mick McCarthy has done a great job to keep Ireland in contention and insists he is comfortable with needing a victory to secure a top two finish, but the Danes are a resilient bunch and have lost just once in their last 34 internationals.

Alongside France and Spain they were one of three unbeaten teams at the 2018 World Cup, exiting the competition with a penalty shootout defeat to Croatia in the round of 16.

And they will have fond memories of qualification for Russia 2018, which was sealed with a stunning 5-1 success over Ireland in Dublin.

From an Irish perspective the last two years have been about recovering from that experience.

And they can be pleased with their efforts in Group D, which have included creditable draws away to Denmark (1-1) and at home to Switzerland (1-1).

It suited Ireland to play cautiously in those games but they are compelled to play for three points in their final game and will have to be careful about how they go about it.

Solid defence has been the key to Ireland's competitiveness in the group because they have been desperately short of firepower since Robbie Keane left the international stage in 2016.

Since they were destroyed by the Danes two years ago they have netted just 16 goals in 18 matches, and each of those goals was scored by a different player.

A brighter future may lay ahead with Tottenham academy product Troy Parrott and Brighton teenager Aaron Connolly showing signs of promise.

But Parrott, who made his senior international debut in Thursday's 3-1 friendly success at home to New Zealand, is yet to feature in a Premier League match for Spurs, and Connolly has withdrawn from the squad with a groin strain.

It leaves McCarthy relying on a group of honest, hard-working forwards, none of whom have scored more than one international goal.

The contrast with Denmark, who have bagged 22 goals in seven Euro 2020 qualifiers, is dramatic.

Their star turn, Christian Eriksen, is having a tough time at Tottenham but has scored 21 goals in his last 29 internationals.

Ireland must also look out for Hoffenheim winger Robert Skov, who has netted three goals in four internationals, and Leipzig forward Yussuf Poulsen, who bagged the only goal of last month's crucial 1-0 win at home to Switzerland.

Denmark are not a team routinely considered as contenders for major titles.

But it his hard to argue with their results in recent years and they look tasty odds-against shots to wrap up qualification with a win.

Key stat

Denmark have lost once in their last 34 games.
