Team news

Scotland
Michael Devlin could drop out of defence after a poor debut performance against Russia.

San Marino
Franco Varrella may make a handful of changes after the 9-0 loss to Belgium.

Match preview

Any incentive for Scotland to give it their all in their Euro 2020 qualifying group has now evaporated.

The Tartan Army were facing an uphill task to qualify automatically before a crushing 4-0 defeat in Russia confirmed they can no longer make the top two in Group I.

Steve Clarke's men can, however, still book a place in next summer's competition via the playoffs in March after topping their Nations League group last year.

In the meantime they face three redundant group assignments, starting with minnows San Marino at Hampden Park.

The visitors themselves were on the end of a 9-0 demolition by Belgium on Thursday, extending their run of defeats without scoring to 15 matches.

The last time they found the net was in a 5-1 loss to Azerbaijan in 2017 and defender Mirko Palazzi is the only player in their squad to have scored for the national team.

Even a Scotland side featuring just the one capped centre-back before the Russia game should have no issues shutting out San Marino but their margin of victory will likely be skinnier than that of the Red Devils.

San Marino are bottom of Fifa's world rankings and lost 4-0 to Kazakhstan and Cyprus before their Brussels mauling. Their most competitive fixture in qualifying was a 2-0 defeat in the reverse fixture with Scotland.

The Scots managed only two shots on target against Russia and they have only one out-and-out striker in the squad in Lawrence Shankland.

Splitting stakes between 3-0 and 4-0 scorelines could be the best method of finding value on the match.

Key stat

San Marino last avoided defeat in a 0-0 draw with Estonia in a European Championship qualifier in November 2014.
