Wimbledon vs Walsall predictions
Walsall made hard work of their League Two season, winning just three of their final 21 games to throw away a nailed-on automatic promotion spot, but they can end on a high at Wembley.
Manager Mat Sadler seems to have finally stopped the rot and the Saddlers followed up their final-day victory at Crewe by comfortably dispatching Chesterfield – a popular pick by many to go up – in the semi-finals of the playoffs.
Walsall impressively won 2-0 in the first leg before landing a 2-1 victory at Bescot, where the Saddlers’ considerable depth was on full show.
The goals in that second leg were scored by substitutes Charlie Lakin and Levi Amantchi and were both assisted by the vastly experienced Albert Adomah, who also came off the bench.
Walsall take on AFC Wimbledon in the playoff final, and just one of the pair’s last ten combined games produced more than two goals. This looks set to be another tight affair, and having that extra injection available on the bench could make all the difference.
Wimbledon overcame the odds to beat Notts County 2-0 on aggregate in their semi-final but they were outshot 27-18 by their opponents over those two matches and were also aided by the absence of the Magpies’ top scorer Alassana Jatta in the second clash following his red card in the first.
The Dons failed to beat Walsall during the season, drawing 1-1 in March after losing 1-0 in November, and they may fall short against a deep Saddlers squad.
Defender Taylor Allen salvaged a point for the Saddlers with a stunning free-kick in that draw and, given goals are likely to come at a premium, the set-piece specialist looks a big price to open the scoring at Wembley.
Allen scored a penalty in the first leg of Walsall’s semi-final, his third of the season, and found the net on eight other occasions, seven of them from free-kicks.
Set-pieces are extremely important in cagey encounters and Allen could be Walsall’s hero once again.

The Saddlers avoided defeat against Wimbledon in both meetings this term and looked back to their best when beating Chesterfield in the playoff semi-finals.

Joe Lewis
The Wimbledon centre-back was booked 11 times in League Two this season and will be up against Jamille Matt, whose physical presence makes him a handful for defenders.
