Match preview

Sunderland's Championship playoff hopes were dented by a 3-1 loss at home to Swansea last Saturday, but the Black Cats have not lost back-to-back games since October and they can respond with a victory over Middlesbrough at the Stadium of Light.

The race for playoff places involves several clubs but Sunderland and Boro could stay in contention until the end of the season.

Boro have made fantastic strides under Michael Carrick, taking 25 points from 11 games since his appointment.

However, seven of their nine league defeats have come on the road and the fixture on Wearside looks a tough assignment.

Sunderland had gone five games unbeaten until last weekend's loss to Swansea, which was hugely influenced by Luke O'Nien's 18th-minute red card.

Tony Mowbray's side have looked exciting with talented wingers Amad Diallo and Jack Clarke supporting prolific striker Ross Stewart and they look decent value to take the points.

Key stat

Sunderland have won three of their last five matches
