Southampton vs Portsmouth preview
South Coast rivals Southampton and Portsmouth have been starved of a derby dust-up since the 2019 EFL Cup but their long wait for a Championship clash may be worthwhile and there should be plenty of entertainment in store at St Mary’s.
Saints are still finding their feet in the Championship after last season’s no-show in the Premier League, as new manager Will Still is working out his strongest team and bedding in his latest signings.
There has been plenty of change over the summer at St Mary’s. Key players Tyler Dibling, Mateus Fernandes and Kamaldeen Sulemana have moved on to pastures new, but they still possess a remarkably deep squad and will be expecting to figure in the promotion race.
It hasn’t started in that manner, however, as Southampton have taken only five points from four matches and have failed to build on their come-from-behind 2-1 victory at home to Wrexham in their curtain-raiser.
Score draws with Ipswich and Watford, either side of a 2-1 loss at home to Stoke, have followed that and they are not sure to have things all their own way against neighbours Portsmouth.
Pompey have seven points to show from their first four fixtures and, having been desperately poor on their travels last season, they have started their road campaign with a 1-0 victory at Oxford and 1-1 draw with West Brom.
The visitors are the more settled of the pair under John Mousinho and that could count for plenty even if they undoubtedly lack the talent of their rivals.
Both teams have scored in all four of the Saints' Championship matches and they may struggle to shut out Pompey, who have failed to score in only one of their last 15 league fixtures.
Archer hoping to lead from the front
Goals in his last two matches against Norwich and Watford should have strengthened Cameron Archer’s claims as Southampton’s leading striker and he will be hoping to lead by example at St Mary’s.
In the Saints’ most recent 2-2 draw with Watford, Archer scored the first goal and had five shots, hitting the target on three occasions. Plenty of chances are expected to fall his way again.
Spoils may be shared in derby duel
The last two times that Southampton and Portsmouth have met in the Championship they played out score draws and this could be a similar story.
The Saints have already drawn 1-1 with Ipswich and 2-2 with Watford this season and Pompey, having seen three of their last six league games end 1-1, may be the happier with a point.
