Leicester vs Sheffield Wednesday predictions

It is not often that you see a team sent off at 1-7 to win their campaign opener but that is the case at the King Power Stadium on Sunday as Leicester bid to make a strong start following last season’s relegation against Championship crisis club Sheffield Wednesday.

The Foxes picked up only 25 points from their 38 games in the Premier League last term but they were crowned champions of the Championship in 2023–24, amassing 97 points to finish one ahead of Ipswich.

Leicester have yet to sign a single outfield player this summer, while club legend Jamie Vardy, Wilfred Ndidi and Conor Coady have departed, but things are looking rosy compared to the situation at Wednesday.

The Owls have had a transfer embargo in place and have lost a lot of last season’s attacking talent, with Djeidi Gassama snapped up by Rangers, Josh Windass joining Wrexham and Michael Smith heading to Preston.

They were Wednesday’s trio of top scorers last season, combining to score 28 of their 60 league goals, and the club are in turmoil with wages having been delayed and the squad refusing to play a behind-closed-doors training match as a result.

So Leicester, still packing the quality of Bilal El Khannouss, Jordan Ayew, Stephy Mavididi and Abdul Fatawu, should be too slick for the unsettled Owls and they may be able to win with a clean sheet in hand.

The Foxes won their final two Premier League home games 2-0 against fellow relegated sides Southampton and Ipswich and they had the meanest defence in their Championship title-winning campaign two seasons ago, conceding only 41 goals in 46 games.

Wednesday won only one of their final nine Championship games last season, losing to nil on four occasions, and they now have only 15 senior players to choose from.
