Both Ipswich and Southampton will be eager to secure an instant return to the promised land, but early-season results suggest the pair won't be able to take things for granted back in the Championship.

The Tractor Boys are yet to win this season and they have had to deal with a couple of notable departures recently, with Nathan Broadhead moving to Wrexham and Omari Hutchinson close to completing a switch to Nottingham Forest.

Southampton have made a perfect start under new boss Will Still but Saints' performances haven't instilled huge amounts of confidence and Sunday's visit to Portman Road will give an indication of where both sides are.

Ipswich vs Southampton preview

Sunday's Championship clash at Portman Road will show just where Ipswich and Southampton are as they aim to put dismal Premier League campaigns behind them.

Keeping Kieran McKenna, who played such an integral role in getting Ipswich back to the top table, was a real bonus for Ipswich and his experience of masterminding promotions previously will be invaluable.

But the 39-year-old will have to spearhead another bid for top-flight football without Omari Hutchinson and Nathan Broadhead, two of the stars of Ipswich's success at this level two seasons ago.

Loanee Jens Cajuste has returned from Napoli after impressing in the top flight last season, while Chuba Akpom has starred at this level before and will go some way to making up for Broadhead's departure to Wrexham.

The first two games of the season – a fortunate 1-1 draw against Birmingham and EFL Cup defeat to Bromley on penalties – show that the Tractor Boys are a work in progress, but they will need to click into gear soon, especially given unbeaten Southampton are their next opponents.

The Saints grabbed two late goals to secure a 2-1 comeback victory at home to Wrexham in their opener before a 1-0 triumph over Northampton in the League Cup.

The wins will have pleased new boss Will Still but there is plenty of room for improvement in Saints' performances and it may take time for Still to get his methods across.

There wasn't much to separate these two last season. After a 1-1 draw at St Mary's in September, Southampton ground out 2-1 victory at Portman Road in February, one of only two league wins all season.

Neither side will want to give anything away so early in the campaign and, given the pair's disjointed displays so far, the draw looks a big runner.

Downes in line for another booking

Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes is often in the thick of the action and has already picked up two yellow cards this season.

The 26-year-old received 13 yellows in all competitions last term, 12 in the Premier League, as he conceded 50 fouls, the most of any Saints player.

Downes was carded in the 1-1 draw against Ipswich at St Mary's in September and could fall foul of the official once more.

Saints can claim share of the spoils

Ipswich's first two matches of the season have ended 1-1 and Southampton's opener against Wrexham would have ended the same way were it not for a last-gasp winner.

These two shared two goals at St Mary's in the Premier League last season before a late goal in the reverse fixture gave the Saints a narrow triumph. Another tight affair can be expected.
