It took Sheffield United several failed efforts before they finally figured out how to justify third-tier favouritism but another fallen giant, Blackburn Rovers, can do so at the first attempt this season.

Mighty Rovers, the 1995 Premier League champions, have plunged into this section for the first time since 1979-80 but look to be blessed with a manager and a squad who should be more than capable of rebounding from May’s humiliation by being crowned Sky Bet League One champions in the spring.

Let’s be clear, had Tony Mowbray been in charge from the off last season Rovers wouldn’t be in this mess.
