Championship relegation predictions

The Championship relegation battle has been fiercely contested and is set for a fascinating conclusion with four key fixtures taking place on the final weekend of the league campaign.

Cardiff's fate was sealed last weekend and only mathematical formalities delay the drop for second-bottom Plymouth, who are three points adrift of safety with a goal difference far inferior to fourth-bottom Luton, but there are five teams at genuine risk of finishing 22nd and each of them knows the minimum result they require to make absolutely sure of survival.

A lot of eyes will be on third-bottom Hull, who head to Portsmouth knowing a defeat will see them relegated.

However, the Tigers are equally aware that a win would see them climb above either 19th-placed Derby or 18th-placed Stoke, who go head-to-head at Pride Park.

Hull could also survive by taking a point although they face a tricky test against a Portsmouth side which possesses the ninth-best home record in the division.

Pompey manager John Mousinho has promised to protect the integrity of the division by selecting a strong side, although there are a few doubts over how much more his players are prepared to give.

Portsmouth had achieved their main goal of survival with two games to spare and there was a noticeable drop off in their performance in last Saturday's 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday where they lost the shot count 19-2.

Hull are hoping to make a fast start on the south coast and, if they hit the front, it would pose a serious test to the teams above them.

Fourth-bottom Luton are the club most at risk of a Tigers' triumph as they finish off their campaign at tenth-placed West Brom.

The Hatters were in the bottom three for three consecutive months between January and April but they jumped out last weekend with a hard-fought 1-0 success at home to playoff-chasing Coventry.

It was Luton's third successive victory and left them with only one defeat from their last nine matches.

However, the Hatters remain at risk of a second successive relegation and look fairly short odds for a victory at the Hawthorns, where Albion have lost only four of 22 home league games.

West Brom have slipped out of playoff contention but they have responded well to Interim manager James Morrison and showed plenty of fight away to Cardiff last weekend by registering a goalless draw which condemned their opponents to League One football.

Albion will be equally keen to avoid losing their final home game of the season and could finish with another stalemate, leaving Luton's fate hanging in the balance.

A tight game could also be in store between Derby and Stoke although it seems probable that both will maintain second-tier status.

Punters have been backing the draw which would seal safety for Stoke and could prove helpful for Derby as long as at least one of the three teams below them fail to take maximum points. Some firms are going under 2-1 about a share of the spoils.

At greater risk than Derby are fifth-bottom Preston, who were 500-1 for relegation last month and were 33-1 before losing at home to Plymouth last week.

Paul Heckingbottom's side face a tough 46th game away to fifth-placed Bristol City, who are aiming to seal a playoff place.

North End have lost each of their last four games and another reverse would leave them at serious risk.

Championship top-six finish predictions

From a Bristol City perspective they tackle their match at home to Preston knowing that a win would preserve a place in the playoffs.

The Robins are in a strong position but could be overtaken by any of the four teams below them, including sixth-placed Coventry and ninth-placed Middlesbrough, who go head-to-head at the CBS Arena.

Coventry are hanging onto a playoff spot following back-to-back away losses against Plymouth (1-3) and Luton (0-1).

However, they have won eight of their last ten Championship home games and look decent value to get the better of Middlesbrough, who have tasted defeat on seven of their last ten road trips.

Seventh-placed Millwall and eighth-placed Blackburn are also taking their playoff chase down to the last game but their chances are hampered by tough fixtures away to second-placed Burnley and third-placed Sheffield United.

Championship title predictions

The title race is a head-to-head battle between leaders Leeds and Burnley, who each need one more victory to finish on 100 points.

Crucially Leeds have a substantial goal difference advantage (plus 64 as opposed to plus 51) so they know that a victory in their final match at Plymouth would seal the deal.

Daniel Farke's side are long-odds on to take maximum points, but are not necessarily guaranteed an easy ride from the Pilgrims, who are generally strong at home and won 2-1 at Preston despite knowing that any realistic hope of survival had already been extinguished.

Burnley will be hopeful of a slip from the Yorkshire side and can at least take care of their own business by defeating Millwall at Turf Moor.

Scott Parker's side have generally relied on solid defence, but they were 5-0 winners at QPR last weekend and can cut loose against Millwall, who might have to play a more open game than usual as they target a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
