AFC Wimbledon vs Notts County predictions
AFC Wimbledon dug deep for last week's 1-0 victory at Notts County in the opening leg of their playoff semi-final and they can finish the job with a home win at Plough Lane.
There wasn't much to choose between the teams at Meadow Lane and Wimbledon's victory was assisted by a fine performance from goalkeeper Owen Goodman.
However, the Londoners forged ahead with Riley Harbottle's second-half header and County's disappointing night was compounded in injury-time when attackers Alassana Jatta and David McGoldrick left the action due to a red card and an injury.
Jatta's two-footed challenge on Alistair Smith connected with the ball rather than player but it didn't go down well with referee Thomas Kirk, who brandished a red card which could have huge implications on the outcome of the tie.
McGoldrick and the suspended Jatta are ruled out for the rest of the playoffs and their absences necessitate a tactical rethink from County manager Stuart Maynard, who has no obvious offensive replacement. The deadly duo have scored 39 goals (Jatta 22 and McGoldrick 17) between them this season in all competitions and are huge absentees for depleted County.
Maynard is making the right noises about the second leg, but his team had been showing worrying signs long before last weekend.
They limped into the playoffs – taking four points from their final six games – and appear unlikely to salvage the situation against a physical and well structured Wimbledon, who won 19 and drew five of the 25 games when they scored first in the regular season.
Johnnie Jackson's Wombles kept 21 clean sheets in the league campaign – including a March 2-0 success at home to County – and they can advance to Wembley with a similar result.
