Magpies with plenty of room for improvement

League Two is easily the most competitive of the EFL title races this season, with the top ten in the division separated by just eight points and the top four split by only two points.

As a result there are nine teams trading at 20-1 or shorter in a wide-open market, headed by MK Dons at 4-1.

Paul Warne’s side front the betting despite being four points behind current league leaders Walsall, with memories of the Saddlers remarkable collapse last season lingering in the memories of the odds compilers.

The Dons are comfortably the top scorers in the division, bagging 42 goals in 21 matches, but their home form has left a bit to be desired as Warne’s men have won just five of their ten games in their own back yard.

Another team who can rack up scores are Notts County, who may be able to put their playoff heartache from last term behind them to win the title.

A return of one point from their first three games was a disappointing start to the campaign but there have not been many better teams in the division since then.

Just three teams can better their tally of 22 goals conceded and only two sides have scored more than their 35.

In Alassana Jatta and Matthew Dennis they have a potent attacking duo who have 18 goals between them and loanee Tom Iorpenda has caught the eye in midfield.

Star creative force Jodi Jones is working his way back from injury and the Magpies are also waiting on captain Matt Palmer to come back from a knee complaint.

They may choose to move on from goalkeeper Kelle Roos in January and that would be beneficial for their title chances considering his poor performances of late.

With a number of key pieces waiting to fall into place, County could be the team to kick on the most in the second half of the season and look a tempting price for the title.

Hard to pick holes in Ravens' hopes

While they may not be as well fancied as other teams in the division it would be wise not to underestimate Bromley, who are the only League Two team unbeaten at home this season after winning seven and drawing four of their 11 matches at Hayes Lane.

After a slow start to the campaign Andy Woodman’s side sat 13th in the table in mid-October but since then they have been extremely impressive, with seven wins from their last eight games.

The Ravens have been solid at the back and do the basics right. They are direct - only Walsall have a lower percentage possession in the league than their tally of 44.4 - and they have been the best proponents of set-pieces in the division, scoring a whopping 19 goals,  six more than the next-best.

In Michael Cheek they have one of the best strikers in League Two, who already has nine goals and three assists, while Nicke Kabamba has also chipped in with six despite playing just 678 minutes.

No team in the league has lost fewer games than their tally of four, and even if they miss out on automatic promotion, with their solid structure and impressive home form they may be a tough nut to crack come the playoffs.

They came through the National League play-offs under Woodman back in 2023-24 so have plenty of experience getting the job done over two legs and at 5-4 could be a solid selection to reach League One for the first time in their history.

Exiles in real trouble

The fact that there are only two relegation places in League Two can often save poor teams from the drop but time is running out for Newport County, who are five points adrift at the bottom of the pile.

Rookie manager Christian Fuchs has not got much of a tune out of the Exiles and they have been living up to their nickname, taking just two points from a possible 30 at Rodney Parade this season.

Unless they can miraculously turn things around in the second half of the campaign, the National League beckons.

Harrogate are also odds-on for the drop and considering the recent improvements of teams around them, it’s hard to argue with the market.

Steve Cotterill looks to have turned things around at Cheltenham, who have the worst underlying numbers in the division but have won three of their last five games, while Steve Evans could prove the man to pull Bristol Rovers out of the mire.

Harrogate have struggled in front of goal, scoring only 18 times, and they could join Newport in the bottom two.
