Birmingham vs Peterborough predictions

Tuesday's 2-1 League One win over Peterborough secured an immediate return to the Championship for Birmingham, who started the weekend 14 points clear at the top of the table, and they can sign off a memorable week by beating the same opponents in Sunday's EFL Trophy final at Wembley.

The Blues' early promotion should come as no surprise given that they splurged £30m on new signings last summer – over £25m more than the third-tier's next-biggest spenders – and they have been the best side in League One by some distance.

Last weekend's 6-2 rout of Barnsley showed just how ruthless Chris Davies's side can be when in full flow and, with dangerous forwards Jay Stansfield and Alfie May in excellent form, they look sure to put on a show at Wembley.

EFL Trophy holders Peterborough will not give up their title without a fight, though, and they showed great resilience to battle back from two goals down at Wrexham in the semi-finals before winning on penalties.

Darren Ferguson has twice won this competition with Peterborough, who may have the mental edge when it comes to playing at Wembley, and Posh could contribute to a high-scoring final.

These clubs' last eight games have all had over 2.5 goals and it would be no surprise to see two attack-minded sides enjoy themselves in a fourth straight EFL Trophy final featuring at least three goals in 90 minutes.

However, Peterborough have lost both league meetings with Birmingham this term – 3-2 in September and 2-1 on Tuesday – so they may have to relinquish their status as EFL Trophy champions to the big-spending Blues, who can give their 43,000 fans at Wembley plenty to cheer about.
