Tuesday's EFL Cup preview

Leicester impressed in the weeks leading up to the World Cup, winning five of six matches, and they can cruise through to the EFL Cup quarter-finals by recording a comfortable victory over League One strugglers MK Dons.

Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers will be aware of the need to keep picking up Premier League points, and Monday's match at home to Newcastle will be his priority.

But Rodgers will want to get competitive match minutes into his first-choice players, so it seems likely that he will select a strong team to face the Dons.

A few Leicester players may lack sharpness but their quality should set them apart from their third-tier hosts.

MK Dons improved their League One survival hopes with a 2-0 victory at Portsmouth on Saturday but the architect of that success, caretaker-manager Dean Lewington, misses the Leicester match because he is scheduled to have surgery on a damaged hamstring on the same day.

Lewington promised to set the team up on Monday but his absence on the touchline makes a tough task even more difficult.

Leicester should soon settle into their stride on a nice playing surface and they can win the game by at least two goals.

A closer contest is in store between Premier League sides Newcastle and Bournemouth at St James' Park.

Magpies manager Eddie Howe would love his team to have a decent run in the competition but his selection is complicated by doubts over the availability of his returning World Cup contingent, including key men Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson, plus injuries to Alexander Isak, Paul Dummett and Emil Krafth.

Bournemouth's squad looks more settled with only Kieffer Moore and Chris Mepham returning from Qatar and an upset could be on the cards.
