Newcastle vs Arsenal predictions

Arsenal's last two visits to St James' Park have ended in frustrating 1-0 defeats and they were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta has often been criticised for being too cautious but his Gunners side cannot afford to sit back and hope to nick a set-piece goal in the second leg against the Magpies.

Both teams have scored in only one of the last 14 meetings between these clubs but a more entertaining contest is on the cards on Wednesday and Arsenal are worth backing to make it a nervy night for the Toon Army.

Newcastle, targeting their first major trophy since 1955, are in pole position after their excellent first-leg win in north London, which came during a nine-match winning run in all competitions.

That game took place almost a month ago, however, and Arsenal's form has improved significantly since then, culminating in Sunday's cathartic 5-1 Premier League victory over Manchester City.

Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli epitomised the confidence in the camp, declaring: "We are going to go there to win the game and to score three, four, five."

That claim might have sounded ridiculous a couple of weeks ago but while Arsenal are moving through the gears after a poor start to 2025, Newcastle have suffered back-to-back home defeats at St James' Park.

Their winning run ended with a 4-1 league loss to Bournemouth, who racked up ten shots on target, and on Saturday Fulham came from behind to beat Eddie Howe's men 2-1.

In between those defeats, Newcastle won 3-1 at bottom club Southampton, where top scorer Alexander Isak's brace took his league tally for the season to 17 goals.

The Swede opened the scoring in October's EFL Cup win over Chelsea and the first leg at Arsenal, and Newcastle have also eliminated top-flight rivals Nottingham Forest and Brentford during their run to the last four.

Arsenal may have left themselves with too much to do following the 2-0 home defeat, particularly as key Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is available after missing the first-leg win due to suspension.

But Arteta's men are capable of turning on the style and five of their last eight away results have been victories in which both teams scored.

They won 5-1 at Sporting and 5-2 at West Ham in November before a 5-1 victory at Crystal Palace in December, three days after beating the Eagles 3-2 at home in the EFL Cup quarter-final.

Newcastle's recent defeats to Bournemouth and Fulham may add to the tension at St James' Park and Arsenal are capable of causing their hosts problems.
