EFL Cup third-round predictions

Newcastle had to wait 70 years to win a major domestic trophy but they finally got over the line in March as they lifted the EFL Cup following a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Wembley.

The defending champions start their defence with a home tie against Bradford who are flying high at the top of League One after taking 20 points from their first nine games in the hunt for back-to-back promotions.

The Magpies have struggled to make things click going forwards since the departure of star striker Alexander Isak this summer.

Eddie Howe is having to reshape their attack on the fly and it has shown, as they have scored only four goals in six matches this season.

The hosts have kept things tight at the back, keeping four clean sheets from those six matches, but they look unlikely to cut loose in this tricky encounter.

A busy schedule and a mix of injuries and suspensions means that Howe has had to rotate his side and he will have to do so again.

Back the hosts to scrape through to the next round, Newcastle are fancied to win a game which produces fewer than four goals.

Huddersfield have completed a pair of giant-killings already in the EFL Cup this season and will be aiming for one of the biggest of the lot as they host Manchester City.

The Terriers have secured penalty-shootout victories over Leicester and Sunderland already this term and have made a solid start to their League One campaign, currently sitting fifth in the third tier.

Pep Guardiola opted for a backs-against-the-wall approach against Arsenal at the weekend and that is at least in part due to how vulnerable the Citizens have looked on the counter attack.

Huddersfield have failed to score in only one of their 12 games this season and both teams to score is the pick in Yorkshire.

Tottenham host Doncaster in the night’s other game and they should ease past Rovers at a short price.
