Dundee United likely to be too strong for rivals

Dundee United are under new management and they could end their two-year exile from the top flight by pipping St Mirren to the title.

The Tannadice side looked to be rudderless under Ray McKinnon and seemed set for more disappointment until he was axed, with experienced former Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo his replacement.

Laszlo is a tad eccentric but he seems to have rejuvenated a United side with plenty of talent in their ranks.

The signing of veteran Australian striker Scott McDonald should have almost guaranteed promotion, but with the likes of Fraser Fyvie, Billy King and Paul McMullan in the squad, United may prove to be too strong for the rest.

St Mirren, under the impressive stewardship of Jack Ross - who would almost certainly have got the Aberdeen job had Derek McInnes accepted Rangers' offer - should push United, but they don't have the strength in numbers that United do.

They will also have a serious battle to hold on to star man Lewis Morgan in January with Celtic and a host of Sky Bet Championship clubs interested in doing business.

There are plenty fighting for the other playoff spots. Queen of the South have again punched above their weight under Gary Naysmith and wily boss Jim Duffy will have Morton in the mix.

Inverness are late developers and could push for a top-four spot, although they have surely left themselves too much to do to challenge for the title.

Brechin have improved, but unfortunately for them they are still out of their depth and look relegation certainties.

That leaves Falkirk, who have been woeful, Dumbarton and regressing Dunfermline to battle it out to avoid a relegation playoff battle.
