There are just three games remaining in the Brazilian Serie A but stakes remain high for Vasco da Gama and Sao Paulo and their clash in Rio de Janeiro has the makings of a tentative affair.

While the hosts find themselves just two points above the drop having won only one of their last six league games, highflyers Sao Paulo are unbeaten in six as they chase a top-four finish and automatic qualification to the group stages of the Copa Libertadores.

Sao Paulo are also unbeaten in ten meetings with Vasco but the last two duels in Rio have finished level and a strong case can be made for a repeat result.

Alberto Valentim’s men tend to produce their best on home soil, where they have lost only one of their last eight games, and recent draws with second-placed Flamengo and third-placed Internacional highlight their stubbornness in front of their own fans.

Vasco da Gama have drawn three of their last five on their own patch, while draw specialists Sao Paulo have shared the spoils a league-high 14 times, with four of those stalemates coming in their six most recent outings.

The visitors have the greater attacking assets in the form of veteran Nene, once with West Ham, and Diego Souza in their ranks. But they have scored two or more goals in only one of their eight matches and may have to settle for a point against a side scrapping for top-flight survival.
