Champions League qualifying first round
5pm Tuesday

The champions of Luxembourg and Hungary, Dudelange and MOL Vidi, have both struggled to take their fine domestic form into European competition.

Dudelange fell to a 2-0 aggregate defeat to Apoel in the second qualifying round of last season’s Champions League, while MOL Vidi, known as Videoton before a recent name change, were convincingly knocked out of the Europa League in the playoff round by Partizan Belgrade. This tie is likely to be more evenly matched.

Dudelange have lost their last seven two-legged Uefa ties while the visitors advanced to the third qualifying round last season but the quality of opposition they have faced must come into consideration.

Dudelange’s last three European exits have come against sides with recent experience of top European competition in Apoel, Qarabag and Ludogorets, while Vidi only had to dispatch Zaria Balti and Cukaricki last year to make the playoffs.

Dudelange won 22 of their 26 league encounters last term, netting 81 goals and proving they are the cream of the crop in Luxembourg, while Videoton were similarly dominant, losing just five games all season.

The disparity between Luxembourgian and Hungarian football has shrunk, with fewer than four points separating the nations in Uefa’s coefficient rankings, and these sides should play out a tight contest.
