Dean Henderson the hero as Crystal Palace upset the odds at Wembley again

Dean Henderson was the toast of Crystal Palace fans again on Sunday as the FA Cup winners claimed a second trophy of the year with a penalty-shootout success over Liverpool in the Community Shield.
After an absorbing 90 minutes at Wembley ended 2-2, England goalkeeper Henderson saved spot-kicks from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott while Mohamed Salah sent his effort over the bar for the Premier League champions.
Arne Slot’s Reds were just 1-3 to lift the trophy ahead of the match but they were left frustrated by Palace, who twice pegged Liverpool back as first-half goals from the champions’ new signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong were cancelled out by Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismail Sarr before Henderson’s penalty heroics.
The shootout does have interesting connotations for the Golden Boot market, in which Salah is a general 5-1 second favourite behind Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
The Egyptian scored 29 times in the Reds’ title-winning campaign, nine of which came from the spot, however he also missed a penalty in a recent friendly against Athletic Bilbao and there is no guarantee that he will retain responsibility this season.
Liverpool continue to be linked with Newcastle star Alexander Isak, so new striker Ekitike will have been delighted to have opened his account in the fourth minute at Wembley.
The former Eintracht Frankfurt forward looked sharp and is 25-1 to top the Premier League goalscoring charts after scoring 15 goals as Frankfurt finished third in the Bundesliga last season.
Palace, meanwhile, were 27-10 to lift the trophy prior to kick-off and the win should give them a tremendous tonic as they prepare to hear a Court of Arbitration for Sport verdict on Monday.
The Eagles have appealed against their demotion to the Conference League from the Europa League following a row over Uefa’s multi-ownership rules.
Palace begin their Premier League campaign at Chelsea on Sunday but are 9-2 outsiders with Betfair and Paddy Power to claim three points at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool are a general 3-10 to beat Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday night.
Meanwhile, Paddy Power have paid out on Celtic winning the Scottish Premiership following their 2-0 win over Aberdeen yesterday.
The victory takes Brendan Rodgers’ side four points clear of Rangers after their Old Firm rivals drew their opening two league games against Motherwell and Dundee.
