Confident Drogheda facing a tougher test

Drogheda United, the early surprise packages in the League of Ireland after taking six points from their first two matches of the season, host Cork City, writes Johnny Ward.

Drogs were impressive in beating St Patrick’s last week but this fixture is a different test altogether and Cork should have too much for them.

They have barely conceded a chance this term and Drogheda will probably struggle to create opportunities, although they will be high on confidence.

It is hard to pick holes in Cork and, with Sean Maguire in such fine form, just one sight of the net could be enough for the Kilkenny man.

Bray have been gambled into odds-on at Bohemians and that is no major surprise. How Bohs manage Dylan Connolly will be critical and, given the injuries depleting their squad, they appear vulnerable against the high-flying Seasiders.

There should be goals in Dundalk’s clash with Limerick. The champions were superb against Sligo, whereas Limerick look like a side who will both score and concede regularly as the season goes on. Backing over 2.5 goals at 8-11 looks the way to go.

Another cracker of a game in Tallaght sees Shamrock Rovers host Derry City and the the 13-8 about the visitors draw no bet looks a good wager.

While the Hoops look hungry for success this season, Derry are probably a better side and Rovers are yet to convince defensively.

Athlone might not be as flattered by their good start as the bookmakers seem to think. The bizarre mix-up about who actually manages the club – a story picked up on by the tabloids this week – may not help but Athlone are worth a punt before a big home crowd.
