Wembley is once again the stage for the FA Community Shield, the annual season curtain-raiser between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners. 

It will be a second trip to the national stadium for Arne Slot, who lost February's EFL Cup final but then guided Liverpool to the title in his first season at Anfield last term, while Crystal Palace fans will be heading across the capital for the third time in just a matter of months after they memorably defeated Manchester City 1-0 in May's FA Cup final.

Community Shield preview 

You can't afford to stand still in football and Premier League champions Liverpool are doing everything in their power to ensure they remain top of the pile this season. 

The Reds eased their way to a 20th English title under Arne Slot last term and they are an even more fearsome prospect after shelling out north of £250 million in transfer fees over the summer. 

That figure could rise far higher if they manage to prize away Alexander Isak from Newcastle in the coming weeks – the Swede is just 2-5 to be a Red before the transfer window shuts – as Slot targets the sustained success enjoyed by legendary Anfield bosses Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

Pre-season results have been encouraging and it's difficult to argue that Slot now has the best forward unit in England with £100m man Florian Wirtz adding even more stardust and creativity. Add Isak to the mix and the rest of Europe will need to be on red alert. 

But integrating new signings takes time and Liverpool were not always watertight at the back last term, conceding 41 times – the most by a title winner since Manchester United shipped 43 in the 2012-13 season. 

Full-backs are fast becoming some of the most prized assets in a team and the Reds have two new ones in Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, meaning connections with their centre-backs and wingers need to be made, and if Crystal Palace can trouble Liverpool in Sunday's Community Shield then it is likely to be from out wide.

Eberechi Eze might not be an Eagle for much longer with Arsenal circling but the England international will be central to all that Palace do at Wembley. 

Alongside Ismaila Sarr, who scored inside nine minutes when the sides met at Anfield on the final day of last season, and Jean Philippe Mateta, Palace have enough weapons to make their mark on a Liverpool side who have kept only one clean sheet in pre-season and conceded in four of their six league games against last season's relegated trio.

Reds will need to keep a keen eye on Sarr

Sarr, like all the Palace players, has fond memories of Wembley, having bagged a second-half double at the stadium as the Eagles swept aside Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Economy was the name of the game for the Senegalese last season, when he fired off 59 shots in the Premier League and steered 29 of those on target. That was far superior to Eagles talisman Eze, whose 29 shots on target came from 102 in all.

Premier League champions to come on strong

Palace's attacking triumvirate will be key if they are to cause an upset, but while the south Londoners kept things tight before the break last season, their matches were often more open after the interval.

There were 59 goals scored in the second half of the Eagles' league matches compared to 43 in the first 45, which spells bad news given that Liverpool only got stronger in matches. The champions won the second period on 24 occasions and scored 46 goals after the break in the league.

Another second-half show from the Reds may well seal the deal at Wembley.

Goals have invariably been the order of the day in recent Community Shield matches and Crystal Palace will feel they have the attacking weaponry to trouble an evolving Liverpool defence at Wembley.

The Egyptian maestro might have to share some of the goals around in a beefed up Liverpool frontline but Salah is still a huge threat in his own right and nobody is going to take penalty duties away from him.

The Senegal international ended the season in great form, scoring twice in Palace's 3-0 FA Cup win over Aston Villa and against Liverpool on the final day of the Premier League season. Almost half of Sarr's shots in the Premier League hit the mark and he could trouble the champions.

Crystal Palace were ahead nine times and level at the break on 18 occasions in the Premier League last term and they could look to keep things tight in the first period on Sunday.
