Jose Mourinho was supposed to deliver a glorious new era at Manchester United but three defeats in just over a week have cast doubt over his appointment and the Portuguese needs to stop the rot with a victory over Sky Bet League One hosts Northampton in the EFL Cup third round tonight.

When Mourinho arrived in Manchester his thoughts were of challenging for the Premier League title but defeats at home to Manchester City (2-1) and away to Watford (3-1), either side of a 1-0 Europa League defeat away to Feyenoord, have seen the Red Devils pushed out from 11-4 to 14-1 to win the league.
