Boca Juniors vs Benfica predictions

Benfica endured a disappointing campaign last season, finishing as runners-up to their Lisbon rivals Sporting in the Portuguese Primeira Liga and in Portuguese Cup.

That could spur on Bruno Lage’s side at this year’s Club World Cup and they are fancied to open their campaign by grinding out a win over Boca Juniors.

With amateur side Auckland City set to be the whipping boys in Group C and Bayern Munich odds-on to win the section, the other qualifying spot for the knockout stages could come down to a straight shootout between this pair.

Boca will be match fit but have not been in particularly good form. They were knocked out of the Argentinian Apertura at the quarter-final stage and failed to qualify for the Copa Libertadores after losing out to Peruvian side Alianza Lima.

Fernando Gago was replaced by manager Miguel Angel Russo at the start of this month, with the veteran boss returning for his third spell in charge, and there is a sense that this is a club in turmoil at present.

The Argentinians will have the fitness edge over Benfica but the Eagles’ squad is littered with quality and they picked up some impressive results last season, beating Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Monaco in the Champions League before losing to Barcelona.

A low-scoring affair looks likely as both teams find their feet in this tournament but Benfica’s class should tell and they are taken to grind out a win in a game which produces fewer than four goals.
