Auckland City vs Boca Juniors predictions

A narrow defeat to Bayern Munich last time out has taken Boca Juniors’ fate out of their hands going into their final Club World Cup group game against Auckland City.

The Argentinians need to beat the part-timers from New Zealand and hope that Benfica lose against the Bundesliga champions, as well as producing a seven-goal swing on goal difference.

That would normally be a fanciful scenario but they are up against an Auckland side who have shipped 16 goals without reply at the tournament.

Auckland put up a decent fight against Benfica, limiting the damage to 3-0 until a late flurry from their Portuguese opponents saw them reach six goals.

However, the Kiwis, who lost 10-0 to Bayern, are completely out of their depth and it's hard to envisage anything other than another tough 90 minutes for them.

Miguel Merentiel has starred for Boca in Edinson Cavani’s absence and he could fill his boots against the minnows in Nashville.

The Uruguayan has netted in both of Boca's matches in Group C and scored six times in as many league starts for the Argentinians this season.

Six players have already scored at least twice against Auckland in this tournament and Merentiel can add his name to that list.
