The ante-post betting suggested European heavyweights Paris St-Germain and Atletico Madrid would dominate Group B but South American champions Botafogo are top of the section going into matchday three.

The Brazilians defended stoutly to claim a shock 1-0 victory over Champions League winners PSG last time out and that result leaves Atletico, thrashed 4-0 by the Parisians in their opener, in deep trouble.

They saw off Seattle Sounders 3-1 on matchday two but, if 2-11 shots PSG defeat the Sounders, Atletico would need to beat Botafogo by three goals to progress to the last 16.

That is not beyond Diego Simeone's men, who finished the domestic season in fine goalscoring form.

They won four of their last six La Liga games, beating Rayo Vallecano 3-0, Real Sociedad 4-0, Real Betis 4-1 and Girona 4-0, although Botafogo may prove stubborn opponents.

They have won eight of their last ten games in all competitions and had to dig deep in November's 3-1 Copa Libertadores final triumph against Atletico Mineiro after midfielder Gregore was sent off in the second minute.

Renato Paiva's men have soaked up pressure in their first two matches at the Club World Cup. They beat Seattle 2-1 in their opening fixture, despite having 12 shots to the Sounders' 23, and had just 25 per cent of possession against PSG.

Atletico boss Simeone would certainly have admired the defensive discipline and grit that Botafogo demonstrated against the European champions.

However, an Atleti attacking unit featuring Julian Alvarez, Antoine Griezmann and super-sub Alexander Sorloth can cause them problems and backing over 1.5 second-half goals looks a solid bet.

Three goals were scored in the first ten minutes of the second half in Atletico's 3-1 win over Seattle and 24 of their 68 league goals – 35 per cent – came in the 76th minute or later.
