DC United played their first match at Audi Park one year ago this week and they could scarcely look more different from the side who were lingering in the depths of the Eastern Conference 12 months ago.

The transfer to the venue proved to be a catalyst for the Washington club, who are now in hot pursuit of the 2019 Supporters Shield, and they can continue their excellent run against minnows FC Cincinnati.

The season has ebbed and flowed for the expansion side, who have responded to their 7-1 mauling by Minnesota with victories in their last two matches.

Centre-back Kendall Waston was named in the MLS Team of the Week for his performance against Chicago but defensive issues persist for the Orange and Blue.

They are without a clean sheet in their last 18 matches and it is difficult to envisage them shutting out one of the division’s fiercest attacks in DC United.

United are expected to be without playmaker Luciano Acosta, who is suspended, but they nonetheless have a creative supporting cast for Rooney in youngsters Lucas Rodriguez and Paul Arriola.

Cincinnati may have received a confidence boost after successive wins but they nearly let their lead slip against Houston Dynamo, before allowing Chicago 20 shots in their last game.

They are a long way from being defensively robust enough to conjure up a playoff berth and they could be outclassed in their first meeting with DC United.
