Chievo can pile more pressure on Milan boss

Serie A BT Sport Extra, 7.45pm Wednesday

Early-season optimism at Milan has long since vanished and Chievo can shunt beleaguered boss Vincenzo Montella closer to the exit.

Milan head to Verona on a run of just one win in six, and that was only against Rijeka in the Europa League. In Serie A they are seriously struggling.

At the weekend the jeers rang out for Montella as Milan were held to a 0-0 draw by Genoa, a desperate contest which saw Rossoneri skipper Leonardo Bonucci sent off. He is suspended tonight and, intriguingly, also sits out Saturday’s showdown with former club Juventus.

Alessio Romagnoli will be summoned to marshal Montella’s back three though it’s further forward where the real issues are – they’ve failed to score in three of their last four matches in the league. Nikola Kalinic has scored in only one league game this term, Fabio Borini has yet to manage even that.

Despite being in terrible form they are 6-5 favourites for the trip to the Bentegodi Stadium, which looks crazily short.

Chievo, who are 13-5 shots, are seventh in the division, two points better off than Milan and are on a six-match unbeaten run after winning the Verona derby on Sunday. Frontman Roberto Inglese scored twice in that 3-2 win.

Rolando Maran’s men have lost only two of nine in Serie A this season, and those losses were sustained at the hands of high-flyers Lazio and Juventus.

Milan have lost none of their last 21 meetings with Chievo, though three of their last four trips to the Bentegodi to play them have ended in 0-0 scorelines.
