Match preview

It was supposed to have been an early Christmas present when unpopular Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet announced he was selling up last month but any festive good cheer at The Valley has soon vanished.

It’s played three, lost three since the takeover news broke, making it a grand total of nine games without a win for Charlton and Hull can make that ten.

Nobody is battering the Addicks – they’ve lost four more games than they have won yet have a goal difference of just minus two – but they have been ravaged by injuries and look desperately short of self-belief.

Hence they have become serial losers and their performance levels are dropping off. They were simply dismal in a 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough last weekend and pretty wretched for an hour of Tuesday night’s home defeat to Huddersfield by the same scoreline.

Seeing ace marksman Lyle Taylor and playmaker Jonny Williams returning from injuries will give everyone at the club a lift but neither man is poised to start against Hull.

The Tigers, in contrast, won the praise of Marcelo Bielsa on Tuesday night. Leeds beat them 2-0 but Bielsa had nothing but admiration for the way the Humbersiders play under Grant McCann.

They certainly look a different team to earlier in the season. Fifteen-goal Jarrod Bowen had a rare quiet night at Elland Road but defensively they were excellent with Leonardo Lopes turning in a starring performance in front of the back four.

They have won five of their last nine and two of their three away successes have come at Nottingham Forest and Fulham, the latter with a 3-0 scoreline.

Eight of Charlton’s ten losses have been by the odd goal and Hull to win by one goal is a 3-1 chance.

Key stat

Eight of Charlton’s ten defeats have been by one goal.
