Union Saint-Gilloise vs Newcastle preview

In January 2014, Christian Burgess played in Hartlepool's 2-0 win over their League Two visitors York City, whose line-up included goalkeeper Nick Pope.

More than a decade later the players cross paths again in the Champions League as Burgess is set to start in defence for Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise against Pope's Newcastle.

The Magpies competed well in their 2-1 defeat to Barcelona on matchday one but their trip to Brussels could be tougher than bookmakers expect.

Burgess and former Accrington defender Ross Sykes helped Union beat Westerlo 2-0 on Saturday, meaning they have won their first four home matches by an aggregate score of 12-0.

Union won the Pro League for the first time last season after a rapid rise to the top of Belgian football and they are already six points clear of Club Brugge in this term's title race.

Both Belgian clubs impressed on matchday one of the Champions League. Brugge thrashed Monaco 4-1 while Union marked their competition debut with an assured 3-1 away win over Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.

Facing a rugged and resolute Newcastle team is a step up from that, although the Magpies are far less formidable away from St James' Park, drawing 0-0 at Aston Villa, Leeds and Bournemouth in their first three Premier League road fixtures.

Gabriel's 96th-minute winner for Arsenal on Sunday was a bitter blow for the Toon Army, whose side were leading until the 84th minute of a pulsating contest.

Like Arsenal, Newcastle are facing questions over their attacking threat in open play. They have scored only four goals in six league games this term and three of them were from dead-ball situations, so they may struggle to take maximum points in Brussels.

A ninth-minute penalty from in-form Canada striker Promise David gave Union the perfect start against PSV and they finished the game with eight shots on target to their hosts' three.

Shooting star Gordon can shine for Newcastle

Anthony Gordon scored Newcastle's late consolation goal against Barcelona on matchday one and his shooting stats have caught the eye.

The winger had seven shots at Aston Villa in the Magpies' Premier League opener, four in England's 5-0 World Cup qualifying win over Serbia and six attempts in 69 minutes in last week's EFL Cup victory against Bradford.

Rodriguez ready to make his mark on Champions League stage

Both teams have towering centre-forwards in fine goalscoring form. Union's David opened the scoring in his last three games and Newcastle's Nick Woltemade headed in the winner against Wolves and the opener against Arsenal.

But Union forward Kevin Rodriguez looks a nice price to break the deadlock, having scored four goals in seven Pro League starts this season and he had a game-high five shots in the win over PSV.

Under 3.5 goals

A tight game looks likely as Union Saint-Gilloise have kept four successive clean sheets at home and Newcastle's first three away league fixtures ended goalless.

Joelinton to be booked

The Brazilian was cautioned in Sunday's defeat to Arsenal and has picked up three yellow cards in five Champions League outings for Newcastle, including one against Barcelona on matchday one.

Malick Thiaw to have one or more shots

The Newcastle centre-back had two attempts at goal against Arsenal and averaged one shot per game for Milan in last season's Champions League.
