Match preview

The dictionary definition of the dead rubber takes place at the Etihad Stadium between Manchester City and Sevilla, which gives Pep Guardiola the chance to tweak his team.

City will finish on top of Group G, Sevilla will finish in third place, so this is little more than an inconvenience ahead of bigger things.

In City's case that means Saturday afternoon's clash with Fulham, while for the Spanish side it's the small matter of the Seville derby against Betis on Sunday night.

Sevilla have travelled with pretty much a full squad but Jorge Sampaoli surely cannot afford to pick his strongest team.

They have taken just one point from their last three La Liga games culminating in Saturday's embarrassing 1-0 home defeat by Rayo Vallecano which has left them in the bottom three.

They aren't conceding loads of goals although City and Dortmund have each popped four past them on home soil.

Away from Sevilla, however, they have mustered a pair of draws, 1-1 in Dortmund, 0-0 in Copenhagen, and could quite conceivably pull off the hat-trick of road stalemates in Manchester.

It isn't as though City are in top gear at the moment. They have scored four goals in their last five matches and miss a focal point without the injured Erling Haaland.

Guardiola, even when offered the chance, rarely produces wholesale changes but Sergio Gomez, Rico Gomez, Cole Palmer and Julian Alvarez would all expect to be involved at some stage in a contest which means very little.

Key stat

Eight of Sevilla's last 11 have produced two goals or fewer.
