Liverpool to win

Liverpool won all four home league fixtures in last season's Champions League including a 4-0 demolition of German champions Bayer Leverkusen and an impressive 2-0 victory against Real Madrid.

The Reds should kick off their 2025-26 campaign by taking three points against Atletico Madrid, who look far less formidable than they were in their pomp under Diego Simeone.

Atleti have made an unconvincing start in La Liga and Julian Alvarez's injury is a major blow to their hopes of silencing Anfield.

They have lost eight of their last 14 Champions League away games and failed to qualify from their group at the Club World Cup after a 4-0 rout against Paris Saint-Germain on matchday one.

Under 3.5 goals

Liverpool started their Premier League title defence with a couple of chaotic victories, beating Bournemouth 4-2 and ten-man Newcastle 3-2.

They have looked more secure defensively in their last two wins and restricted title rivals Arsenal to one shot on target in last month's 1-0 success at Anfield.

Arne Slot's men needed an injury-time penalty from Mohamed Salah to break down Burnley in Sunday's game at Turf Moor, where goalkeeper Alisson did not have to make a save.

There have been under 3.5 goals in each of Atletico Madrid's four league matches this season and, without Argentina ace Alvarez, they may struggle to unsettle Liverpool's defence.

Robin Le Normand to be shown a card

Atletico centre-back Robin Le Normand is available for the trip to Anfield, where he can expect a difficult night against Salah, Hugo Ekitike and, possibly, Alexander Isak.

The Spain international was booked in Atleti's La Liga opener at Espanyol and picked up the only card of the game this month when Spain beat Bulgaria 3-0 in World Cup qualifying.

Bulgaria had only 22 per cent of possession that night but Liverpool should put Le Normand under significantly more pressure at Anfield.

He has a shocking disciplinary record in La Liga, having been booked 21 times in 52 starts in his last two completed campaigns for Real Sociedad and Atletico.

Le Normand was cautioned in the 26th minute of Atletico's Club World Cup loss to PSG in June and he faces another top-class attacking unit on Wednesday.
